Dreaming of the Unique Travel Destination – Part 2

Welcome back to part two of my bucket list of places to go in the world. My list is long and I can only hope to live long enough to visit them all but it’s good to dream, right? Plus, there’s that allure of the foreign that I have a yearning for. Having said that, I may have unintentionally mislead you into thinking that I only want to travel abroad. I know I tossed that idea out there into the world in the last post, but really, I just love to travel and yes, there ARE many places stateside that I would love to explore as well. Perhaps the fact that they are more easily accessible is what nudges them a little further down on my list, but they are definitely in my thoughts. In fact, I will be writing about Charleston, SC in an upcoming post because we are going to be traveling and exploring the area around that lovely city next month! Be sure to wander back my way to hear all about that. Or, (shameless plug) sign up for my newsletter and get all my posts dropped right into your mail box.

So, without further ado, my first pick for today’s post is …

Paradise – Glenorchy Queenstown

Everyone dreams of going to Paradise one day right? This trip is going to require a lengthy journey to get there, but I’ve heard such amazing things I truly hope to convince the hubby to go someday. When I say lengthy, I mean a day or more and more than one flight connection. This idea does not appeal to my hubby AT ALL so it will most assuredly take a lot of cajoling, begging and pleading to get him to agree to go. However, as we discovered on our Ireland trip, distance really doesn’t matter when you are having so much fun!

I stumbled on this pick while searching for out-of-the-way destinations. As I’ve said, I love the idea of wandering through small villages, over unspoiled countryside and in and out of little pubs and shops. I want to talk to the locals, enjoy my morning coffee in little cafes and just enjoy the scenery. Glenorchy, I learned, is a tiny little town a mere 40 minutes or so south of Queenstown. Keep going another 40 minutes and you will land right in a wonderfully picturesque region of Paradise. What’s the appeal of this place for me? It isn’t a shopping Mecca nor are the streets lined with shops or restaurants. What you’ll find in Paradise is showstopper views and glorious natural landscapes. Paradise is actually part of the Mt Aspiring National Park and (fun fact), if you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings films, several of the movie scenes were filmed there!

Bradford on Avon, England

The Town Bridge (shown in the image above) crosses the ‘broad ford’ on the Avon which is the origin of the name Bradford on Avon.

My second pick for today is also abroad, though not quite as far away as New Zealand. For this pick, I’ve selected the often overlooked Bradford on Avon. Located along the banks of the River Avon, just 8 miles from Bath, this little market town is located on the Western edge of the Cotswolds. It think what draws me here is all the stone houses, little mismatched cottages and the English gardens. There are oodles of things to do nearby including the Longleat Safari Park (yes, I like zoos), Salisbury Cathedral and Avebury, home to the largest stone circle in Europe. You thought I was going to say Stonehenge didn’t you? Well, Avebury is a bit more off the beaten path and not so touristy as Stonehenge. A win in my book! Of course, there’s bound to be a castle or fancy English manor I’ll want to tour and they’re all but guaranteed to make me sigh with envy, but shucks, we just don’t have that stuff here in Minnesota!
